Drain tile systems are networks of pipes under and around the foundation of your house or commercial building. They’re designed to collect water and bring it to your sump pump, to be propelled away from your home or building. A drain tile test measures how well this system is working. If your drain tile system is clogged or not functioning properly, it won’t protect your house’s basement and foundation like it’s supposed to. This can cause costly water damage.

WHAT IS AN INTERIOR DRAIN TILE TEST?

For an interior drain tile inspection, a contractor opens up a few holes in the basement’s concrete floor to view the drain tile pipes and run water through them. If the system is working correctly, the water will flow to the sump pump and be taken away from the house. If the pipes are broken or clogged, the issue will be revealed, and the contractor will assess the needed repairs or cleanout.

WHAT IS A DRAIN TILE VS A FRENCH DRAIN?

The definitions of French drains and drain tiles are very similar and often used interchangeably. But if we’re being technical, there are a couple of differences. French drains are classically installed close to the surface, outside your home. They’re made of perforated pipe that’s buried in a bed of gravel. The gravel trench slopes away from your house, collecting water into the pipe and using gravity to send it away from your foundation. Drain tiles (also called footing drains) are typically installed deeper underground, in the foundation of your home. The design is similar to a French drain, but more contained, directing water to your sump pump which then propels the water away.
